At Carver, we are committed to nurturing each student to attain his or her full potential. In pursuit of this, the planning of our 2011-2012 Junior High Program revolves around the needs of those students “in the middle.” The junior years of high school often don’t get the respect they deserve. Call it the middle-child syndrome — the grade 8/9 years are one of those middle years lost between the fear and excitement of the first year of high school and the joy and bravado of the senior year of high school! In the hierarchy of importance, however, we believe that the junior high years deserve a high ranking because of their pivotal nature.
Overall, our focus is on the development of the whole child. We give our students the spiritual support, individual care and attention they need to be successful and to flourish. Academically, we offer both a challenging and developmentally appropriate curriculum. Our Educational Support Services Program is designed to help students who require assistance with class work outside the regular classroom. Our Wings Program is designed to meet the academic and social needs of highly motivated students. We are also integrating an English Language Learners’ Program which will assist international students. We are excited about the addition of new courses into our school curriculum which includes AP Computer Sciences 12, Home Economics 8/9, Mandarin, Communications 11/12, Technology Education 8/9 and Christian Studies 11/12 which includes modules such as Family Studies, Apologetics, Christianity and Modern Media, Faith and Science, and Ancient Greek. The quality of our academic and extra-curricular programs resides in the range and depth of study offerings, and in the personal and professional strength and commitment of our teachers.
To our Grade 8s and 9s: You have completed your elementary schooling and have your secondary years ahead of you. We believe that your junior high years are the most important years of your lives. Junior high is a time during which you will change and grow in many ways. Your junior high years can help you become the best person you can be if you take advantage of the many opportunities we offer to discover new talents and strengths. Engaging activities in core subjects, athletics, electives such as drama, technology education, home economics, art, band, choir, French and student leadership are some of the ways you may choose to make of the most of your junior high years at Carver. Get involved and make your junior high years the best they can be!
Parents, we invite you to be active members of our school community. First and foremost, this means connecting early and often with your teen’s teachers. We have an excellent junior high teaching team in place with Mr. Steve Friesen (Junior High Team Leader) and me leading this new program. We encourage you to get involved in our school life by taking advantage of opportunities to get involved with our school community as a parent volunteer.
In the meantime, if you have any questions about our Junior High Program for the 2011- 2012 school year, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to welcoming you to Carver!
